The Importance of Sustainability in Design Studios

When I was growing up in the 80’s, there was a big push to educate everyone on recycling. It took a while to get on the same page, but I think great progress was made at the time. We still have a long way to go.

In today's world, sustainability is the next big effort in our personal and professional lives. From reducing carbon footprints to conserving resources, businesses across industries are recognizing the crucial role they play in preserving our planet for future generations.

At Viscera Studio, here's how we remain committed to reducing our environmental footprint while delivering exceptional design solutions:

Waste Reduction: Our commitment to minimizing waste permeates every facet of the design process. Operating as a 98% paper-free studio, we've significantly reduced our environmental footprint. While some of us still rely on notebooks or post-it notes for note-taking, we continuously seek ways to further streamline and optimize our practices.
Remote Work: Embracing remote work not only grants our team greater flexibility but also diminishes the necessity for daily commutes, consequently lessening our collective carbon footprint. Additionally, operating on a four-day workweek further contributes to minimizing our environmental impact.

How can we all practice sustainability in our daily lives?

  1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Practice the three Rs by reducing consumption, reusing items whenever possible, and recycling materials such as paper, plastic, glass, and metal.

  2. Conserve Energy: Turn off lights, appliances, and electronics when not in use. Use energy-efficient appliances and LED light bulbs, and consider installing a programmable thermostat to regulate heating and cooling.

  3. Limit Water Usage: Take shorter showers, fix leaks promptly, and use water-saving fixtures such as low-flow showerheads and faucets. Additionally, avoid leaving taps running unnecessarily.

  4. Opt for Sustainable Transportation: Walk, bike, carpool, or use public transportation whenever possible to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and decrease emissions from vehicles. Consider investing in a fuel-efficient or electric vehicle if feasible.

  5. Plant Trees: Planting trees helps offset carbon emissions by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Participate in tree-planting initiatives in your community or support organizations that plant trees around the world.
